How to Choose a Shortboard ?

Choosing the right shortboard can seem confusing, there are so many different versions out there. From hybrids to grovelers, classic shortboards to step-ups, shortboards can be tailored to a wide range of surfers and conditions. Find out which model best suits your needs in the following video.

The Hybrid

A combination of a classic performance surfboard and a fish, hybrids are loved for their versatility. Usually a little easier to paddle, hybrids keep things fun on those average days delivering the stability and down-the-line speed of a fish along with the high-performance manoeuvrability of a shortboard. Suited to both intermediate and advanced surfers, extra volume usually means they’re well suited to performing in smaller, weaker surf, but they’ll also work in good waves. While not as explosive as John John Florence’s Pyzel Ghost, it’s a shape that offers plenty of responsiveness. See all Hybrid surfboards available in Australia, new ans used surfboards.

The Groveler

Looking to improve your airs and turns in pretty average surf? You need a groveler in your quiver, a shortboard designed for explosive performances even when the waves are sub-par. Usually coming with lower rocker and a little more volume, this type of board offers an outline geared towards performance surfing. Tailored for both intermediates and advanced rippers, everyone will benefit from one of these in their quiver.

The Classic Shortboard

What you see the pros riding in the best waves around the world, the classic shortboard design is found in every line-up in surfing. A short length, narrow width and strong rocker give them their ‘banana’ shape; all geared towards optimum performance in clean, powerful surf. Add to that finely-tuned rails and the result are the most manoeuvrable and responsive boards on the market. If you’re looking to get radical, then look no further.

The Step Up

If you’re looking to negotiate bigger, better surf then the step-up is for you. Shaped along the same lines as the classic shortboard to deliver optimum responsiveness, the step up comes with a little more length to offer you an easier paddle, getting you into bigger waves earlier. Once on your feet, a longer rail line helps you harness the added power and speed that comes with bigger waves. A step up generally comes with a narrower tail, either a pintail or rounded pin, offering you additional hold and control when you need it most; surfing the very best waves of the season.
